Since I Don’t Have an Assistant

Sometimes I'm a little TOO relaxed.

I wanted to provide a general notice and disclaimer about my tardiness and my disorganization level. I just found a comment thread on another blog that underlined the need for me to do this. In that thread it was pointed out that I’d published an article two issues late, which is true. I accepted responsibility and explained. Allow me to do so here.

“. . . I’m terribly, horribly disorganized. I know it and I try, but despite a real yearning for organization I seem to lack the talent to maintain any sense of order. Maybe someday I’ll be able to hire an assistant. One can dream. Meanwhile, a reminder is always welcome if it seems I’m about to drop the ball (or already have).”

Anyone who’s known me for any length of time knows that I can forget to answer emails, text messages, phone calls, submissions to the magazine, blog comments, and so on. Furthermore, I am always procrastinating or getting distracted with other things. And it often seems like just when I’m making progress on getting organized, some major upheaval occurs (like pneumonia and my kid in the hospital) to send me back to the organizational Stone Ages again. I’ve forgotten tarot readings (hello Aydira!), and to watch videos made by friends in bands (hello Gerald!), and to do people’s charts, and to add more book content to this blog, and on and on.

Here are just some of the projects I have in various stages of completion, along with daily stuff, right now. Items in italics are those which pay, sort of. Sometimes.

  • Keeping my house clean or catching up on that
  • 6-8 issues of Rending the Veil per year, which I code, edit, and make the graphics for by myself
  • This blog
  • The forum on this blog
  • Painting the inside of my house – a project three years old!
  • Getting organized – this is a nightmare
  • Painting some furniture for my brother
  • Gardening and outside chores, errands, repairs et al
  • Editing books for Immanion Press
  • Spending time with my family
  • Working with Meridjet
  • Counseling or channeling for other people
  • Writing my book
  • Anything I do online like email etc
  • The inevitable crisis
  • Art commissions out the wazoo (I get paid in points.)
  • eBay
  • Fixing other people’s computers
  • having a life
  • ETA: My own art, in various forms

I’m sure I’m forgetting something. Or a bunch of somethings. But I tend to flit from this to that to the other thing, and sometimes I get really fixated for a couple of weeks and then forget what I was working on. Or a combination of these. But it’s always good to remind me, poke me, prod me until you see a result because odds are, I’m going to forget or get sidetracked, and I don’t want to slight anyone. I’m a year behind restoring the old archives for Rending the Veil. I really do wish I had an assistant or someone to delegate to!

So don’t hesitate. Just try to be gentle. :))

See, this kind of stuff (aka life happening) is why I love yoga. Yeah, I’m all about the yoga this morning apparently. Having a calm clear center in the midst of business means I end up stressing less about things which come up. For some, it’s taking care of stuff in its time and then leaving it there (aka, my job) and also pacing myself. I burn out too easily and need to be able to slow down both body and brain.

Clearly, I should be doing yoga. Being disorganized in my environment makes my mind disorganized, and that throws me off center. I’ve never taken yoga, though I’d like to. I have a couple of dvds, but not a lot of space here. Suggestions? What do you recommend for someone out of shape who is fairly limber but too poor to sign up for a class right now? Stretching and meditation? Something else?

If you have a yoga studio in your area, check to see if they do a free day or first class free offering. Especially with something like yoga, I think it’s necessary to have a teacher present to keep you from overextending or otherwise throwing yourself off from the posture.
Two+ years of yoga and I’ve gotten to know very well where certain parts of my body need to be in order to get the full benefit of the practice.
Tai chi is always an option too. :)

I can teach stretches and meditations. I learned from an excellent martial arts teacher in my hometown. The meditations center and balance your energies, and the stretches will help your body feel better. And more limber.

On the being disorganized… I don’t know that I can help with that. You have a LOT of stuff, and little space to place it all. That’s why getting organized is such a nightmare. But! I did learn a few organizing techniques from my horology teacher, and I can offer those up to help out.

Sounds great. I know some stretches from my former gymnastics class. (I suck at gymnastics, but the exercises were great.) We’ll have to compare.

I know I have a lot of stuff. lol I am trying to thin it out, but it’s a work in progress. There’s a lot I’m not willing to part with. I’ve given away all my belongings several times over, and I’m going to hold on to the things that matter to me or are useful. I’m trying to go by a 3-check system: 1) Do I love this? 2) Can I use this? 3) Is this amazing and excellent for the ambiance of my home?
