My blood sugar bottomed out on me today. It’s never happened to me before. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 3 years ago, and I take Metformin for it. Today I was hanging out with my brother David as he worked on the main house remodeling, and I hadn’t eaten in about 24 hours. I didn’t think about it, since a lot of the time eating is just a bother, so I don’t (bother). I came inside and was sitting in the chair feeling really sleepy.
Suddenly I was ravenous, and within about 30 seconds I was burning up, and was really, really sick at my stomach. I thought I was going to throw up, and I was all sweaty and dizzy and felt like I was going to pass out. Kara ran out to get David and by the time he came in I knew I couldn’t stand up. I asked him to run get us some food, since at that moment I couldn’t even complete the thought process as to what we had in the kitchen.
He helped me to my room, where I just managed to crawl into bed and collapse, with my feet at the head of the bed. Kara stayed with me. I almost went to sleep several times, but managed to fight it off while she talked to me. I sipped water, which helped the nausea. Then I finally was able to sit up after what seemed a very long time, and I ate a couple of cookies. David eventually made it back with a chili cheese coney from Sonic, and I ate. Then it passed, though I’ve been really tired for the rest of the day.
Kara went to sleep and I lay in bed reading a magazine, planning to nap but never did. My legs are now killing me (peripheral neuropathy), and I should probably eat again soon. But I won’t be getting to the comments in the other posts today, so look for that tomorrow. Unfortunately, my glucose monitor needs batteries so I wasn’t able to check my sugar. But I feel much better and intend to eat a bowl of cereal here in a minute.
I’ll be more careful in the future.
