Recognizing Your Potential
When I first met my spirit companion1 in 1994, I thought I had lost my mind. I’d never heard of such a thing, and though I had minor experience with the paranormal and was a practicing witch, spirit contact had never been my strong point. Meeting Meridjet changed my life and brought me to places I could never have foreseen. If I had not allowed the experience to play out, and watched it with a discerning eye, I would not be the same person now. If this is happening to you, do not fear. It will change you in ways you cannot imagine and would never expect. I certainly never expected to find myself writing a book on the subject a decade later.
This book will teach you much of what I have learned about spirit companions and spirit contact in over ten years of personal adventure and observation. During that span, I’ve encountered hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people who share this experience. It is this accumulated knowledge that I will share with you here, to teach you how to find, attract, perceive, and work with a spirit companion. You will learn the differences between a “companion” and a “guide,” and how to work with each to its, and your, best potential. I will teach you about malicious spirits to avoid and how to recognize them, as well as how to defend yourself against any intrusion. This book contains a wealth of information about working with spirits and using that work to reach your highest potential spiritually, psychologically, and emotionally. Much of this information has never before been available in print.
A New Phenomenon
The spirit companion (SC) phenomenon has grown increasingly visible in the new millennium, particularly in the magical community. The internet has proven to be a central meeting point for many who lead alternative lifestyles — people of alternate views ranging from the gay/ lesbian/ bisexual/ transgender (GLBT) community to the various magical disciplines to an assortment of ways to self-identify (Otherkin and multiples, for example) are finding common ground and a common bond. When I started my first SC group in 2001 (see appendix), I was alone with my possible delusion, and I wanted to find other people having this experience. Providing support for others in similar situations was a second reason for forming the group. It was a turning point for me, and for many others to come. The community limped along for a couple of years, and then virtually exploded into activity with a sudden influx of new people who seemed to come from all directions.
As the SC phenomenon gains visibility, it is likely that the evidence presented by various individuals will lead to wider acceptance in the magical community and to a greater degree of general validity. If you are experiencing this yourself, it is my hope that this book will show you means of coping, ways of utilizing the relationship to your greater fulfillment and its greatest potential, and directions to go to find others of like mind. If you are not familiar with spirit companions, I hope that you learn something about these very real experiences.
One of the most fascinating experiences that you can have with a spirit companion is the ability to work on personal growth with a knowledgeable and integrated partner. Many SCs have access to the full minds of their human partners and are able to work with them both subconsciously and in an active, guiding sort of fashion. This guidance, however, is not the typical guidance that you would normally expect to hear from the average spirit guide. It goes well beyond “move to x city,” or the directive to “take an umbrella” on a sunny day. Personal work of this magnitude is similar, in a sense, to spiritual therapy. The spirit companion is in many cases of a higher nature and can at times predict the course of events. It can use that information to guide you toward not only the most beneficial choices, but also is able to influence your thoughts, emotions, and the perspectives that create or allow those events in order to stimulate the necessary personal development that will take you further, faster. Within the parameters and limits that you agree upon between you, the SC can directly nudge your attention or focus in one direction or another, based upon the direction he2 feels would be most beneficial to your growth. If you are wary of allowing this depth of interaction, then you can grant access gradually based on your comfort levels. I will be covering malicious spirits and your defenses against them later in the book.
Spirit companions are able to see events in the past as well as the future, and they can gauge the effects of those events on their human partners. I have been subject to specific types of healing of the lingering effects of past traumatic experiences through the help of my companion. I will discuss healing more in a later chapter, as well.
While a variety of SCs exist, the one I see most consistently in my work is the spirit lover or mate. My own relationship is one of these, and therefore most of my experience lies in this area. I’ll be presenting not only information gained from my work (and play) within this relationship, but also information gained during my years of exposure to the general community.
When I first sought others experiencing this situation, I did Internet research and found very little. Due to the difficulty that I had finding other individuals with guides they had personal relationships with, I elected to create a group designed to gather these individuals together for the mutual support that was so clearly lacking on the World Wide Web. I created my first e-group at Yahoo! Groups with this intent in mind. Response to this group was lukewarm for more than two years, then finally it blossomed and people emerged in droves from out of the proverbial woodwork. This group led to further groups, and to a spiritcompanion.com domain name. Through this exposure, I have met hundreds of people who are involved in similar SC relationships, and I will refer to the knowledge gained from the generalities found among them in the course of this book. You can find URLs for these sites in the appendix.
The potential for an interactive relationship with a spirit resides in everyone. Tried and true methods for attracting spirits exist, including methods for initiating personal relationships. These are giving, generous relationships that are mutually comfortable, allowing both human and spirit to be valued, loved, and cherished. This book provides methods of contacting and attracting a spirit companion, as well as information on specific exercises to use to gain better, clearer contact with your SC. I will show you how to gain the most benefit from this relationship, regardless of the level of intimacy (or lack thereof) that you desire.
It is my fervent wish that this book reach people who’ve sought in vain for guidance in their relationships with spirits — relationships that have never been written about before. It’s taken much longer than anticipated to finish this work, but I hope it will be worth the wait.
Footnotes
- Words in bolded italics can be found in the glossary [usually on the blog as well as in the book].
- In most cases, I will be using the female gender for the human partner, and the male for the spirit partner, as I’ve met far more women than men in this situation, and I’d like to avoid use of mutated gender-neutral pronouns.

*chuckles* “Virtually exploaded”. I like what you did there.
Perhaps explain to people what the magical community is, i.e. occultists, Neo-Pagans, Thelemites, experimentalists, etc. Not a long sideline, just a little ditty.
Aside from that, damned good intro. I’ve nothing else to really say. By the way, I love footnotes and footnote compendiums. To more indexes and appendices I have, the happier I am. This may not work for everyone though.
You always catch those puns I didn’t realize I’d made.
It was pointed out to me the other night that many people reading this won’t even be pagan. I’m not sure how to handle that.
Hmm…good point. That may take a bit of work, but giving them something with which to have the spirit undergo a looking-at by their God (i.e. the Prayer of St. Michael or Our Father) to protect them while they are exploring, or asking God something to the effect of “Please, Lord, if this relationship with spirit (N.) is pleasing to You, Bless and Sanctify it, and cause us to grow in harmony, love, and trust.” Just a thought.
