The Year Can Begin… Now

I wasn’t ready til now.
I’m just starting to take down my holiday decorations; the tree is still up and so are the lights outside. I’ll get to them. Today I picked up everything else and organized it into three boxes, two of which were crammed with wrapping paper and ribbon. My brother gave it all to me, and he takes gift wrapping very seriously. lol
So the other night I watched The Taking of Pelham 123. I found it to be very droll. Not suspenseful at all, and the one question running through my mind for the entire film was never answered. (Spoiler alert.) John Travolta plays the villain who hijacks a subway, demanding ten million dollars within an hour. His true goal is to shock the stock market and make a mint on the rising price of gold. He tells the “good guys” over and over that he’s prepared to die, and we believe him. Clearly, if he dies the money from the stock market gain is going to someone other than him — his estate. But we never find out who that is. In the end, he makes over $300 million on that, and when he dies, they still don’t tell you what happened to the money. At one point, the cops are rushing to find out about his connections to the stock market; they even know how much he invested. But they never reveal the result of this fevered need to know.
The pacing of the movie was too calm for a film claiming to be “a dynamic psychological face-off,” and “thrilling.” It wasn’t thrilling. It was mundane, and the lack of a resolution on the stock money is unforgivable. He actually demands to be shot until he finally is… why would he do that unless the money was going to go where it needed to go whether he lived or died? Bleh.
Tonight I’ll be watching Public Enemies. Hopefully, that will be better. First, though, I’m going to a chili cook-off with Susan and Tina. I probably won’t eat; the chili in this area is typically hot, hotter, and omgfire, and I don’t do well with spicy food. I might have to make my own pot of relatively mild chili tomorrow to make up for it.
In Facebook news, I’ve been in contact now with several people from my old high school and neighborhood. It’s been fun and interesting. One of my contacts will have some photos in the upcoming Imbolc issue of Rending the Veil. I’ll let you know when it’s out.
It hasn’t hit 30 degrees all day. It never gets this cold here. Even when it snowed, it never got this cold. My front door is very drafty. I need to deal with that issue tomorrow, if I can find my insulation. Hope you all are staying warm.
