Dead Cat

Earlier tonight my daughter and I went out for a bit; we got home around 9 pm, or four hours ago. Kara just went out to go for a walk and found a dead cat on our walk. Our driveway is about 50 yards long and it’s another 15 feet to the porch; the cat was about 3 feet shy of making the porch. It was a small, charcoal gray cat that I am not familiar with. It had no obvious wounds.
My guess is it got hit by a car or perhaps ate something poisonous (I cringe at the thought that anyone around here is baiting cats), and crawled up our driveway because we have so many cats of our own, most of which stay outside as they wait for new homes. Poor kitty. Its mouth was open and it had a pained expression on its face, as if it died mid-meow. It was lying no more than six feet from where I’m sitting, and I can typically hear our cats meow at the window plain as day. I heard nothing, so that plus the lack of obvious wounds reassures me that it wasn’t a cat fight that killed the kitty.
I’m sorry I didn’t find it in time, but if I had I would have gone searching for a late-night vet and I have no money for that (no offense to injured or very sick kitties). I’m sad, anyway. I hope it was a stray and not someone’s beloved pet. No collar or I.D., though.

Hi Jess! Sorry I didn’t see your pending comment earlier. I’ve been hugging Kara a lot today as she’s having a bad day. Hope you’re doing well.
We used to have a real problem with feral cats breeding around here. Two of my own are actually kittens from this population. Usually traffic is slow enough through here that there isn’t a problem but one time I found one of the feral kittens dead on the sidewalk and I think it had been hit by a car. I buried it in my back yard.
Sorry you had to deal with that. It is a downer.
I disposed of it in the trash, alas, because it was night and because burying an animal here is a very tough job. Hard clay soil. I’m keeping an eye out for lost kitty posters.

Yeah, it was sad. I felt a little guilty for not somehow realizing it was out there. It almost made it to the porch. Poor guy.
You have such a big heart – I know this was a blow to you. It makes me sad too. I get upset every time I see a dead animal on the road and yes I am one of those people who will probably have a wreck and kill myself first before I hit one. I have come close several times – scared a friend and got chewed out by more than one person about watching out so I don’t cause an accident. The kitty probably knew that you would take care of him – seriously – cats are not stupid. People think they are but they communicate. Love my cats and I know you love yours. My Cesar is such a great cat – thank you for letting me have him!
It was really sad to see how close he’d gotten to the porch — and our porch rather than the closer porch of the house, too. I am the same way driving, so I try to be very watchful. I have come close before, too, and one time a squirrel landed on the top of my car as I was going down the road. Scared the crap out of me. He ran away before I even realized what it was, but Jesi was behind me in her car and saw what had happened.
If he knew I’d take care of him, I’m so sorry for not somehow knowing he was there. I feel a little like I failed him, you know? He got so close but I never heard a sound.

Today as i was leaving my house and pulling out of my driveway, I glanced back at my driveway and saw a dead brown cat. I am a GIGANTIC cat lover as all animals, but have always been especially drawn to cats. This freaked me out and saddened me. However, wat is weird is that the reason I didn’t see him initially is beacuse he was under my car. It’s as if he crawled under my car to die or something. I live on a road, not a neighborhood, so I think maybe he got hit by a car crossing the road, and came under my car to die. I know I didn’t run it over because of its location-it wasn’t behind my car..but in the spot directly under the car-and I didn’t hear any noise or feel anything as I was pulling out..plus he looks absolutely fine-no external injuries.
I am extremely sad. I hope it wasn’t one of my neighbors beloved pet..dont think so since I know they have dogs but not sure if they have cats. What should I do? How to dispose? Should I try to call some neighbors to see if they lost a cat?
I disposed of the cat in a trash bag, though I don’t think that’s necessarily legal. I’d definitely ask around, and keep an eye out for signs. He may have drunk anti-freeze, which is lethal. I had a cat die under my grandmother’s car after drinking it. I don’t know what happened to the dead cat, here, either. there were no obvious injuries, but he was stiff when I found him.
