You know I rarely repost the garbage I get in email forwards, but most of us don’t know how to put out a kitchen oil fire, and this is a good thing to know. First of all, water on oil = bomb. Secondly, flour does not smother it and can also equal an explosion. Thirdly, tossing a pan lid on a fire isn’t guaranteed to work and can literally backfire (with apologies to Eric Draven). This video shows the results of water thrown on an oil based fire (and this type of fire includes candle wax such as a candle in a glass, etc… and on this I speak from pure, well-remembered experience!). It also shows how to safely smother the same type of fire. Watch it — it’s very short, and it may save your life or a family member’s.
Unfortunately, I can’t figure out how to get the embedded player to play in Firefox, so you’ll either have to click the link at the bottom or view in IE until someone volunteers a plug in that will work.
ETA: For Firefox, click the Plugin link, then the Manual Install link, and install the plugin that comes at the Microsoft Open Source project link. It will then play in Firefox.

Thanks! This is something everyone needs to know and see.
I thought so, too! Glad you didn’t think it was a waste of blog space.
I’d like to watch it (the idea of putting out a fire with flour never made sense to me!), but it won’t let me–I guess the Firefox part is the “install missing plugin” (which it then says doesn’t exist) and the Mac part is the one where the link tries to open in TextEdit… so a normal link would be nice, assuming it’s on Youtube or something!

I’ve clicked the plugin link and then the manual link, and installed the plugin there — it’s at a Microsoft Open Source project site. It works.
But you can download it with the above link. I haven’t uploaded it to YouTube as I’ve only ever done that once. I’m pretty N00b when it comes to video tech.
