I Am Seeking Your Opinions

I have several questions for those of you inclined to answer. There are a couple of different sections. Just answer what you want to, in comments. These questions are personal to me, not any sort of formal survey, but I really do want feedback. Thank you.

Part one: Media

  1. Can you recommend a movie and tv show streaming website, and tell me what you like about it (and how much it costs)?
  2. Can you recommend a beginner-friendly video editing/creating program and tell me about it?
  3. I haven’t watched TV in a very long time. My most recent discovery – within the last month – is Supernatural, but other than this, I haven’t watched anything since Clark graduated high school on Smallville. Tell me about your favorite shows.
  4. What’s the secret to finding the good stuff on YouTube?

Part two: Stroking my ego

  1. How often do you read this blog? Why do you never/almost never comment?
  2. Have the recent uber-confessional posts made you uncomfortable?
  3. Have you seen the new (professional) blog layout? What do you think of it?
  4. Did you know that if you comment at LiveJournal or on any of the feeds, I never get that comment? (You need to click the post link and comment at the blog.)
  5. What do you like/dislike about this blog?

Part three: Your turn to shine

  1. What’s the url to the blog you most often post on? (If there’s an RSS feed, please give me that url as well.)
  2. What do you write about in your blog? What are your favorite topics?
  3. Tell me about yourself: What’s your name or nickname? How old are you? What are your spiritual views? Where do you live? (country or state is fine) What are your dreams or goals?
  4. Have you ever wanted to connect on IM? What’s your Yahoo user name or Gmail address?

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to any of these questions. I’d really like to get to know my audience more, and make some new friends! :)

  1. What’s the secret to finding the good stuff on YouTube?

There’s good stuff on YouTube? How often do you read this blog?

This is a loaded question for me. If I’m online, then I have LJ sitting in a tab in my browser. So I read it hourly? daily? minutely? As soon as I see you have an update?

Why do you never/almost never comment?

I do when I feel I have something to say, add to a conversation, or otherwise need to be a nuisance. ;-))

Have the recent uber-confessional posts made you uncomfortable?

    Have mine?

Have you seen the new (professional) blog layout? What do you think of it?

If you mean the gray one, it doesn’t seem to work properly in Firefox. It looks very different in Internet Explorer. I love the font page layout itself (I saw something similar this morning elsewhere too, ironically enough) and thinking about rearranging mine to something similar. I just don’t want to pay for it. LOL! But, generally, I find that I really like the new look other than I think—based on just my perception of you from online—it is a bit drab in color and needs to some life, and—just a personal quirk here—the advertisements and white buttons are a bit distracting to the quality and feel of the overall site. This latter reason is why I read from the feed (ooo … that rhymed!) rather than from the site itself—though I think I’m going to grab the regular feed and funnel it into my Outlook instead (hmm … running out to do that now, in fact …).

Did you know that if you comment at LiveJournal or on any of the feeds, I never get that comment? (You need to click the post link and comment at the blog.)

It is amazing how many times one can say this and people don’t grasp what you mean … I say the same thing all the time. LOL! What do you like/dislike about this blog?

    I like your fresh perspective.

What’s the url to the blog you most often post on? (If there’s an RSS feed, please give me that url as well.)

You’re on it already (which I appreciate your presence very much, I should add), but for the sake of shameless self-promotion, the regular blog can be found at Eremitic Life and the LJ RSS feed is here with the regular Feedburner subscription page here. What do you write about in your blog? What are your favorite topics? Generally religion, school, life: lately just shit. Working back into more productive modes at the moment though.

Tell me about yourself: What’s your name or nickname? How old are you? What are your spiritual views? Where do you live? (country or state is fine) What are your dreams or goals?

Hi! I’m bishop. I’m 38 yrs old, 5’8″, 19.. um, right. Sorry. A couple of crossed wires in there. My bad. :( I’m a thelemite living in North Dallas with aspirations to teach syncretic religious mythology and religious theory at the community college or university level while focusing on research into historical and theoretical religious evolution.

  2. Ouch. I can’t edit that and see some formatting mistakes in paragraphs that I missed. Oops. :(

  3. Part one: Media
Can you recommend a movie and tv show streaming website, and tell me what you like about it (and how much it costs)?
-I usually just do Youtube or Google’s Video feature.

Can you recommend a beginner-friendly video editing/creating program and tell me about it?
-I recommend Premiere in Trial form or otherwise if you can get your hands
on it. This is Adobe’s pro video editor, but it might still be good to dip
into this. This is the only one of the bunch I’m gonna point you two that
I have tried, but I thought links to Open Source software would help.
-Here is a weblink that might help:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_editing_software#Non-linear_video_editing_software_3
    -Any another: http://tv.isg.si/site/?q=node/873

I haven’t watched TV in a very long time. My most recent discovery – within the last month – is Supernatural, but other than this, I haven’t watched anything since Clark graduated high school on Smallville. Tell me about your favorite shows.
-I’ve really stopped watching TV almost altogether myself; the stuff I want
to see (i.e. Fullmetal Alchemist) or have been pointed to (i.e. Lost) is on
DVD. If I watch TV, it’s usually for Discovery Channel, or History
    Channel.

What’s the secret to finding the good stuff on YouTube?
-The secret, to me, is to do searches that are generally specific. For instance, to find Thundercats (before many of the vids were taken down) I looked for “Thundercats”, then “Thundercats episodes” when that didn’t pan out. Some users will break up the episodes into 10 minute bits, so if I’m looking for a specific episode I’ll throw in “Thundercats Episode 1″. Unless all the videos for Thundercats’re taken down, I’ll usually find it.

    Part two: Stroking my ego
How often do you read this blog? Why do you never/almost never comment?
-I read this blog about every day or so, and don’t always comment because I don’t think I’ve anything more to add to the post other than “Hi!. Sometimes I don’t know what to add to a post that will add to it in any substantial way.

Have the recent uber-confessional posts made you uncomfortable?
-Nope, I like to read them. This is your blog, and you shouldn’t censor yourself, IMHO. This is your place of expression.

Have you seen the new (professional) blog layout? What do you think of it?
-I like the overall look, and feel. The slate-gray really makes the graphics you put up pop.

Did you know that if you comment at LiveJournal or on any of the feeds, I never get that comment? (You need to click the post link and comment at the blog.)
    -I knew that, but I keep forgetting it. ^_^;

What do you like/dislike about this blog?
-I like that you update often, bring a lot of spiritual, metaphysical and similar concepts to the table, while still being candid and upfront with yourself to your audience.

Part three: Your turn to shine

What’s the url to the blog you most often post on? (If there’s an RSS feed, please give me that url as well.)
-I really should post to this more, but I am at: sarenth.livejournal.com

What do you write about in your blog? What are your favorite topics?
-I write a lot about metaphysical topics, topics on spirituality, philosophy, on things that jump me up on my soapbox, and personal things.

Tell me about yourself: What’s your name or nickname? How old are you? What are your spiritual views? Where do you live? (country or state is fine) What are your dreams or goals?
-I’m Sarenth, 22 years old and live in MI, USA. I hope to become a professional graphic designer or IT professional, have a place of my own and custody of my son. I hope someday to help organize/found/what-have-you, Pagan and interfaith works and orgs to help communities, share ideas of spirituality and overall, work more alongside one another than against.

Have you ever wanted to connect on IM? What’s your Yahoo user name or Gmail address?
-You have it already; see you online!

  4. I don’t watch much TV these days, and mostly rotate between a few channels to see if my interest is caught. The only shows I catch new are Monk, Psych, and the Starter Wife. I know the latter, at least, can be seen in full on the USA site. (All are on USA.) They’re fun and relaxing and have yet to bore me.

    Ego:
I read whenever you post (yay feeds) or if I am bored I may reread stuff. I don’t know if I like the layout here for posting comments; there is not enough of a color contrast to see boxes. Oh, and I think you have comments on the lj feed to this post. ;)

The rest, I think you generally know. If there’s anything else, you are free to ask.

  5. @bishop: I use firefox, and it looks fine to me. And it looks exactly the same in IE for me, as well as Chrome. What are you seeing? Which version of Firefox are you using?

There should be an edit link at the bottom of your comment. But I edited your link so it should be okay now.

Thanks for the comment! I need to find a better system than LJ since I don’t get over there enough. I’ll add your feed to my iGoogle meanwhile.

  6. 1. Can you recommend a movie and tv show streaming website, and tell me what you like about it (and how much it costs)?

surfthechannel.com, or tv-links.cc or ninjavideo.net (surf has most any show or movie, show are the day after airing, tv-links.cc has most any show or movie, less reacent that surf but the older eps always play, ninja has popular shows only, HOURS after airing)

    3. I haven’t watched TV in a very long time. My most recent discovery – within the last month – is Supernatural, but other than this, I haven’t watched anything since Clark graduated high school on Smallville. Tell me about your favorite shows.

    Supernatural
Stargate Atlantis-parallel universes, snark, and the Wraith (who feed on humans) SG-! spin-off
Medium-Mom with 3 psychic girls used to work cases for the ADA, family-thesed, fleshed out
Ghost Whisperer-Widowed woman runs antique shop, same theme as Medium, not as family driven or as fleshed out as Medium
Dexter-serial killer, kills bad guys, works as a forsensic path for the PD

    1. How often do you read this blog? Why do you never/almost never comment?
On the RSS-feed on LJ, every day. Nothing to say related to the post.

    2. Have the recent uber-confessional posts made you uncomfortable?
No, they made me feel I know you better, and you’re not as much an icon now. :)

    3. Have you seen the new (professional) blog layout? What do you think of it?
Hard to read, and to make comments. Nice colors though. :)

    4. Did you know that if you comment at LiveJournal or on any of the feeds, I never get that comment? (You need to click the post link and comment at the blog.)
    yes knew that

    5. What do you like/dislike about this blog?
Seems to diverge from the stated purpose, SC-related communication. I get that Meridjet is LOA, but it feels like it lacks new info, or old info reexamined.

    1. What’s the url to the blog you most often post on? (If there’s an RSS feed, please give me that url as well.)
http://rens-sanctuary.livejournal.com (is mostly FO, you’re both on it though)

    2. What do you write about in your blog? What are your favorite topics?
My family, my metaphysical experiences, other stuff, metaphysics is the topic of choice, Obama, etc.

    3. Tell me about yourself: What’s your name or nickname? How old are you? What are your spiritual views? Where do you live? (country or state is fine) What are your dreams or goals?
Jenny or Ren, 26, agnostic, MO, unknown and to return to England, and to develop my spiritual side, find my SC, I have one.

    4. Have you ever wanted to connect on IM? What’s your Yahoo user name or Gmail address?
    Yes. YIM-lyssaleighann gmail-mme.femme

  7. Hey Sheta! I’m using Firefox 3.0.4. It’s primarily the top menu (About: Meridjet: etc). In my IE it’s along the top with the Title/Subtitle. In my Firefox it is “under” and fully “covered” at the top of the dark gray area. It’s in the same horizontal location, but the vertical is off.

I just realized that it’s possible that’s done with Java and one of something or the other is interfering with that function on my side.

  8. @bishop: How’s it look now? I shortened the list. :) Thanks for the details!

  9. Comment I’m migrating from LJ so I can keep it with these others….

Movie and TV streaming site: hulu.com – easy to use, lots of good stuff.

Video editing: I use Windows Movie Marker for capture and direct to DVD, and MOVAVI VideoSuite if I need to edit or convert to different formats. I use Avid Media Composer for complex professional stuff but it is very pricey.

TV Shows: I’m in love with The Big Bang Theory – really smart comedy. Other stuff I’m watching: Fringe, True Blood, NCIS, Santuary (on SCI-FI), Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Numbers.

YouTube: I just search on keywords, and if I find a channel I like I subscribe to it. Here’s my channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/cloudwatcher523

I read the blog whenever you post, but don’t often have time to comment. Nothing you post bothers me, although I am sometimes concerned for your well-being.

The rest of the stuff about me, I think you already know.

  10. Part one: Media
    I’m afraid I can’t help with any of this-we dumped the TV/cable years ago…

What’s the secret to finding the good stuff on YouTube?
Not a clue. I usually wait until someone sends me a link (I am beginning to sound like a luddite!)

    Part two: Stroking my ego
How often do you read this blog?
    I check it daily.
Why do you never/almost never comment?
Good question, I think because I seem to always be in a rush, and your posts don’t lend themselves to the blythe, off the cuff or snarky kinds of comments. And, I always intend to go back later and comment, but by then there are new posts to read. (which is why its taken me so long to answer these questions)
Have the recent uber-confessional posts made you uncomfortable?
    No.
Have you seen the new (professional) blog layout? What do you think of it?
    I like it alot.
Did you know that if you comment at LiveJournal or on any of the feeds, I never get that comment? (You need to click the post link and comment at the blog.)
    Umm, yeah.
What do you like/dislike about this blog?
Clearly, it is you, with no bs

What’s the url to the blog you most often post on? (If there’s an RSS feed, please give me that url as well.)
http://hearthwitchery.blogspot.com/ (but I think there may be a feed, too. theres the luddite in me, again)
What do you write about in your blog? What are your favorite topics?
When I get around to it, some of the things going on in my life, home and magic.
Tell me about yourself: What’s your name or nickname? How old are you?
Well, Lavanah is one of my nicknames, as I made a promise to my husband years ago that as long as we had children in the public schools, I would not out my identity on the web. I’ve kept my promise, but I noticed that he uses his actual name on at least 1 yahoo discussion group on magic. Age? 47, which I think is on the other side of the generational divide when it comes to living on, and via the web.
    What are your spiritual views?
The best thing I can say about that is that they are firmly amorphous or amorphously firm.
Where do you live? (country or state is fine)
    New Jersey, USA
What are your dreams or goals?
To see my kids happy adults in a society that isn’t about to self destruct. To become matriarch of a grand circle of people who will respect and worship me. To make enough money as a healer that my husband could retire (this is the least likely of the three!)
Have you ever wanted to connect on IM? What’s your Yahoo user name or Gmail address? :-) Its the generational thing again. I don’t even think about it much-I’ll email you.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to any of these questions. I’d really like to get to know my audience more, and make some new friends!

  11. First off, I love the way your site is looking. The artwork to go with the entries is a great touch.

I’ll try to leave more comments. I do read every post. Like some others said I feel like I don’t have anything to add a lot of the time but I’m probably just being too hard on myself and assuming I have nothing worth saying. Same with why I don’t chat more or use my blog.

I loved the confessional posts. I really should have commented hehe. But I admire how you go back and look at yourself and also that you are willing to do so publicly.

  12. @aydira: I like the art, too. It’s fun to try to find stuff, though I still forget I need to add it to the post.

You’re very sweet, and you comment more than most people already. I appreciate them all — and I’m sorry for taking so long to reply!
