Some Kind of Ironic
You know those old movies, such as Some Kind of Wonderful, in which the lead actor or actress is searching for love in all the wrong places, meanwhile overlooking their perfect partner, who is right in front of them? Typically, this is their best friend of the opposite sex, the person they turn to for support, and who also happens to be madly in love with them and waiting for them to notice. Yeah, that.
I don’t know about in love with me, but I think that for the last five years I have overlooked and taken for granted a precious commodity in search of same. I’ve been looking for this perfect friend who will always be there for me, and all the time she was right there, there for me. I made a lot of mistakes and messed it up. And it’s taken me a long time to understand all of this.
In the movies, there’s always a happy ending when the lead character gets that epiphany – right after finding out what a jerk their chosen crush really is – and they fall into the arms of their best friend, finally realizing that he or she is their perfect mate.
One can only hope.
